2008: Sun rise and sun set, phases of moon
For bioluminescence (Buzzards Bay)
Usual time to go is between 10 pm and midnight
The following are high and low tides for the phase of the moon
For clear nights, the best seems to be waning half moon and new moon
Full moon
moon rise: 8:30 pm -- moon set: 4 am
high tides: 8 am, 8:30 pm
low tides: 2 am, 1 pm
Waning half moon
moon rise: 12 mid -- moon set: 1 pm
high tides: 1:30 am, 2 pm
low tides 7 am, 8:30 pm
New moon
moon rise: 5:30 am -- moon set: 9 pm
high tides: 9 am, 9 pm
low tides 3 am, 2 pm
Waxing half moon
moon rise: 1 pm -- moon set 12:30 am
high tides: 1:30 am, 2:30 pm
low tides 7:30 am, 8:30 pm
Water temperature (recorded in Woods Hole harbor at 8:30 pm every day)
For ctenophore / other animal collecting off rock pier
Easiest is probably at high tide
Full moon
high tides: 8 am, 8:30 pm
low tides 4 am, 3:30 pm
Waning half moon
high tides 2 am, 2:30 pm
low tides 9 am, 10:30 pm
New moon
high tides 9 am, 9:30 pm
low tides 5 am, 4:30 pm
Waxing half moon
high tides 2 am, 2:30 pm
low tides 9:30 am, 10:30 pm
The Great Sippewisset Marsh
The general idea is to arrive just before high tide and float with
the ebbing current to the ocean. The timing is similar to that for Buzzards
Bay
/ Gansett
Full moon
high tides: 8 am, 8:30 pm
Waning half moon
high tides: 1:30 am, 2 pm
New moon
high tides: 9 am, 9 pm
Waxing half moon
high tides: 1:30 am, 2:30 pm
Currents in the Hole
Flood = current flows out of the hole; Ebb = current flows into the hole
Flood period is somewhat longer than the ebb period (~7 hrs vs ~5 hrs)
Current is a bit stronger going into the hole than out
Full moon
flood starts 10 am, 10:30 pm
ebb starts 4:30 am, 5 pm
Waning half moon
flood starts 9:30 am, 10 pm
ebb starts 4 am, 4:30 pm
New moon
flood starts 4:30 am, 5 pm
ebb starts noon, 11:30 pm
Waxing half moon
flood starts 10 am, 10:30 pm
ebb starts 4:30 am, 5 pm
Tide flows map time lapse

Other notes regarding Eldridge
West Falmouth harbor high and low tides are 10 min after Newport
Little Harbor in Woods Hole high and low tides are 30 min and 2 hr 20 min after
Newport
The current flows and high and low tide are not that correlated in time. For
example, on July 10, 2006 (BB= buzzards bay, WH = woods hole):
midnight WH current is flowing into hole
1:37 am BB low tide
3:39 current starts to flow out of hole
3:57 WH low tide
7:45 am BB high tide
8:15 am WH high tide
10:52 am current starts to flow into hole
1:06 pm BB low tide
3:26 pm WH low tide
4:01 pm current starts to flow out of hole
8:09 pm BB high tide
8:39 pm WH high tide
10:46 pm current starts to flow into hole
General notes on the moon and tides:
Tides are higher and currents stronger at full moon and new moon. The distance
between the earth and moon also has an effect. The time when
the distance is shortest is called "perigee" and when furthest
is "apogee". Tides are higher and currents stronger when the moon
is at perigee. Lastly, when the moon is on the equator, morning
and evening tides are about equal in height and currents are about equal
in velocity,
and when the moon is at its most southerly or northerly declination,
the tide and currents are different.
